The much-anticipated Airoli Katai Naka Road Project Phase 3 is set to begin its preliminary work soon, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

This project, which is being executed in three phases, aims to enhance connectivity and reduce congestion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Phase 3 specifically involves the construction of an elevated road linking National Highway (NH-4) to Katai Naka.

The contract for this phase has recently been awarded, and the contractor will soon begin initial activities, including surveys and geotechnical investigations. With a project cost of ₹1,981.17 crore, the construction period for Phase 3 is set at 48 months.

Meanwhile, Phases 1 and 2 are progressing well, with Phase 1 being 90% complete and Phase 2 - 75% complete. Both are expected to open for traffic by October next year. Phase 1 includes the construction of a 3.43 km elevated and twin tunnel road from Thane Belapur Road to NH-4, with a 0.94 km elevated portion and a 1.68 km twin tunnel. The elevated portion has been completed, and the twin tunnel work is 90% finished. The revised contract cost for Phase 1 stands at ₹556 crore.

Phase 2 focuses on constructing an elevated road from Airoli Bridge to Thane Belapur Road. This elevated section, which also has 3+3 lanes, will merge with the Phase 1 elevated road near Airoli station and further connect to a tunnel at Parsik Hill. The construction of Phase 2 is currently 75% complete, with a revised contract cost of ₹395 crore.

The entire Airoli Katai Naka Road project, which spans 12.3 km, is being developed under the Extended Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project (MUIP). The entire project alignment starts from Airoli end of Mulund-Airoli Bridge, crosses Thane Belapur Road and further NH-4 (old) and connects the Katai Naka-Badlapur Road crossing the Kalyan-Shil Road at Katai Naka.

At the Airoli end, the freeway aligns closely with the under-construction Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR), enhancing connectivity between the two distand location of Dombivli (Central) and Goregaon (Western).
