Four of the twelve stations on India's Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train route—Virar and Thane in Maharashtra, and Sabarmati and Surat in Gujarat—have been chosen for SMART development. These stations will evolve into activity hubs, featuring improved connectivity and modern amenities while integrating metro, bus, and taxi services for seamless transit.

SMART Development Goals:

SMART development aims to reduce travel time, urban congestion, and emissions by enhancing public transport. Utilizing Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) principles, areas around each station will include a mix of offices, hotels, schools, and healthcare facilities within walking distance, fostering vibrant, self-sustaining communities that drive local business growth and job creation.

To boost commuter accessibility and economic activity, the NHRCL plans to develop surrounding areas under TOD policies. This initiative involves collaboration with the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the Ministry of Railways, and the state governments of Gujarat and Maharashtra, with technical support from Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Initial efforts will focus on building essential infrastructure such as pickup/drop-off points, parking, and passenger plazas. Development will extend to areas within 500 meters of each station, requiring updates to local planning and infrastructure, including road widening.

Each station will reflect its city’s unique culture, fostering community pride in India’s first high-speed rail system. Over the next decade, the TOD project will expand up to 800 meters from each station, using high-speed rail as a catalyst for sustainable urban growth and creating livable neighborhoods.

The NHSRCL will oversee the development of the stations and their surroundings, including the passenger plaza and connections to existing infrastructure. Within ten years of operations, city authorities will enhance road connectivity and develop supportive infrastructure around the stations.
